National Dream Renewed. Keeping Toronto on track.
Saturday, April 20, 2013, 1:30pm-3:30pm, free, Metro Hall, Rm 308/9, 55 John Street (nearest subway: King at University). Transport Action Ontario/Canada town hall meeting on the cuts to VIA Rail. Presentation followed by audience participation in discussion.
A flyer for this event is available at http://nationaldreamrenewed.com. Quoting from the flyer:
"...Greg Gormick will speak on 'VIA Rail and the Future of Passenger Train Service in Canada.' After making some investments in VIA Rail, the federal government has now made huge budget cuts. With the cut in 2012, train service was reduced in the Maritimes, southwestern Ontario, and even Toronto-Montreal. Once a large train network across the country, with Toronto as the main hub, little of VIA remains. Service is now poor even within southwestern Ontario, with only one train a day in cross-border service. This hard-hitting talk considers the wrong turns that have been made - bureaucratic hostility, erratic funding, lack of appropriate legislation, deliberate steps to drive away customers, and more. Reducing our rail passenger service puts Canada at odds with every other G8 nation, all of which are investing to take advantage of the economic, social and environmental benefits offered by modern passenger trains." There are alternatives.
