RE: [CanPassRail] Railways, Railfans and Terrorism

Didn't Margaret Thatcher try to discourage (at least) "trainspotting" during
her time as PM?

Subject: [CanPassRail] Railways, Railfans and Terrorism

Following all the coverage of the foiled terror plot, I am growing slightly
concerned by the media coverage. Apart from finding every terrified
commuter at Union Station to say how they want x-rays and metal detectors,
the media keep repeating the same line from the RCMP press conference: "They
watched trains and railways in the greater Toronto area."

Unlike where I am now (studying in the UK) railfans in Canada do not have a
high profile in culture. My concern is that we will be a target of
suspicion. I propose we monitor the situation and perhaps write an open
letter to the government/media/Canadian public explaining our hobby and how
we are extra sets of eyes and ears trackside. We are an asset, not a
threat.

Just a thought.
